Energy Tree thrives only if you don’t waste energy

The Energy Tree is a contraption you have to look twice at, to try and work out if it’s a good or bad thing.

Designer Ben Arent developed the concept for Microsofts Startsomething competition and it works quite like a smart meter - but with a real tree.

Simply put, using monitoring gadgets, the energy tree keeps track of how efficient you’re being with your energy consumption and recycling.

If you’ve been a good recycler the tree will receive the water and nutrients it needs to grow. If you’ve stayed up till four playing your Wii and burning popcorn - your tree gets a disease and starts to die.

The tree is supposed to serve as a visual reminder not to waste energy, and also create an emotional attachment to the wider world and the reasons why energy waste is bad.

Winners of the competition will be announced this month.
