Extra Anya Hindmarch bags on the way

If yesterday you thought you’d stroll into Sainsbury’s on your way to work and pick yourself up a little designer bargain, that was the Anya Hindmarch ‘I’m not a plastic bag’ bag - you were probably disappointed.

We say ‘was’ because fashionistas and ebay sellers had queued for the bags from the early hours, and now if you’ve still got your heart set on one, they’re not quite so much of a bargain.

Prior to Sainsbury’s sell out the bags were being bid on for up £200. This morning there’s about 1,500 of them being flogged on ebay, so the increased supply has settled the price down somewhat to the region of £50-60.

If your not flush this month and think you’ve missed the boat, you’ll be pleased to hear that more will be available. The bags will be available in the US in June in a limited edition navy blue and in Japan in July in a bottle green, also limited edition. Register on the Hindmarch home page to hear about these first.

Hindmarch and We Are What We Do’s collaboration has certainly gained mass awareness, but is it just awareness of the bag itself or has the issue of disposable bags also been highlighted during the furore?

As we mentioned yesterday, supermarkets give out the equivalent of 290 bags per shopper per year, one idea to reduce the amount is charge for them. I wonder how much they could get for them if they printed ‘I’m not a fashion icon’ on the side.

    Hype hype hype.
Come on guys - Sainsburys and Anya Hindmarch have played the media like a violin.
While I’d expect the daily rags to pick this up it has been lead story here and on the BBC!!!!

This is greenwashing whatever way you look at it- this bag is not organic or fairtrade and the exclusivity just makes people but something they don’t really need. I’ve also heard that the press releases were sent out in silver plastic envelopes....

It seems the London boutique Coco Ribbon are also jumping on the ‘green bag’ bandwagon this June- and as you’d expect from greenwashers none of their other stick is particularly ethhical.
