Free bags are banned in Waitrose trial

Waitrose is maintaining the limelight by banning bags, in a two week trial, running until the end of next week.

Customers in the Saffron Walden branch won’t be given free carrier bags for their shopping, so they’ll have to bring their own or buy a bag for life.

In 14 other stores, from Brighton to Edinburgh, shoppers can opt to queue at a ‘green till’ where they’ll also have to find other ways of carrying home their shopping.

The trial will promote the reuse and recycling of carrier bags and will also help Waitrose assess whether a bag-less supermarket a possibility in the foreseeable future.

With supermarkets giving out the equivalent of 290 bags a year to each person in the UK, there is the potential to make a massive difference.

It’ll take a shift in behaviour but maybe it’s time for less talking and more doing, like they’ve already done in Modbury.
