OneClimate.net’s virtual Bali on Second Life

If you feel like you have your tuppence worth to add to the UN’s Climate Change Conference, why not get your virtual self to Bali?

Social networking space Oneclimate.net has created an island on the 3D virtual world of Second Life. If you haven’t already, you can create an avatar and ‘travel’ to Bali where you can watch live streaming broadcasts each night of the conference as they take place in the virtual world of Second Life. A selection of questions posted to the site will be put to the participants in Bali.

OneWorld’s co-founder, Anuradha Vittachi, explains; ‘unlike its Real Life equivalent – and appropriately for a climate change conference – Virtual Bali will enable its participants to avoid flight-generated carbon emissions.’

Vittachi points out that climate change is set to be the greatest creator of poverty and suffering the world has ever known, undermining the good work done by development workers for decades. ‘There can be no global justice without climate justice,’ she says. ‘Do we really want to be the generation that ended life as we know it for hundreds of millions of people?’
