Ryan Frank makes old desks into desirable design objects

Office furniture can be so incredibly dull and yet it is the main ingredient in Ryan Frank’s new, stylish furniture range. The transformation is uncanny.

Frank’s ‘Strata’ range is made from 60-70 per cent waste wood – in this case old and unwanted office desks - and the rest is FSC plywood. This, Frank explains, is necessary to provide structural strength. For future production the redundant office furniture will be collected around the UK by the charity and social enterprise, GreenWorks.

GreenWorks will also assist in the production process and the charity’s design manager, Patrick Bek says: ‘This is a fantastic example of how salvaged materials can effectively re-enter the industry, this is exactly what we are trying to achieve with Greenworks.’

Frank likes the sentimental aspect of the process, saying: ‘I love the fact that I am able to build a new piece of furniture which already has a history of its own.’

The Strata range will be launched at the TentLondon design event on the 20th of September.
